Adult Forum & Enrichment
“Everybody’s got a hot button!” (or so the saying goes). Theoretically there was a time when people didn’t bring up politics or religion in polite conversation. There also seems to be a marked reticence to discuss the topics that dominate much of our emotional time and energy (money sex and power) in religious settings—perhaps the place that we could most use some divine inspiration if not intervention. This year’s Adult Forum series attempts to help us “get over it.” A gifted team of lay leaders (with a tad bit help and/or interference from clergy and guest presenters) will take us on a tour that is likely to hit at least one hot topic button for you. God-willing, together:- We will seek (and find) God in new ways;
- We will look again at our understanding of God and our need for God’s grace and presence in all of our lives (individually and corporately); and
We will encounter God’s presence in our explorations, finding a time and “space” filled with play, laughter, quiet, rest, relationships, study, growth (and good work)—all in a divine balance!
The Forum is held on Sundays, 9:45-10:35 A.M. (Classes resume September 16.)

Immigration
In September, we spent three weeks discussing issues around immigration.
The first week we explored our own experiences and impressions of immigration, and reviewed some historical and current data. We began talking about some of the knotty dilemmas and positions surrounding legal and illegal immigration. Some of the powerpint material from week 1 is available here.
What does the Episcopal church say? We suggest you read the Bishops' pastoral letter (second link). Extra credit for reading the full theological statement. In September 2010, The House of Bishops told the Episcopal Church that the starting point for any effort towards immigration reform begins with "an obligation to advocate for every undocumented worker as already being a citizen of God's reign on earth and one for whom Christ died." The statement came in a 17-page document titled "The Nation and the Common Good: Reflections on Immigration Reform," which is meant to be used as a theological resource on migration and immigration. In an accompanying pastoral letter, the bishops rooted their statements in the baptismal covenant's call to respect the dignity of every human being.

On October 7, we will work to construct a Christian approach to the immigration issue. Look forward to a guest speaker who is actively working to show hospitality to immigrants in our midst and facilitate their effective integration into the community.
